No fewer than 13 individuals lose their lives and ninety-eight hurt in train derailment in the nation of Mexico.

A tragic railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the pace and handling of the country's major public works projects.

The disaster occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line developed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.

“We will thoroughly investigate what caused this accident,” stated the head of state.

The president confirmed that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The president added plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those affected.

Key Undertaking of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose presidency ended the year before. This project was intimately linked to his administration's developmental agenda for the southeastern region.

Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economy of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Worries

The development of both train projects was overseen by the armed forces, marking a significant expansion of its duties in civilian infrastructure. They were completed at an fast-tracked pace, defying predictions to be partially opened before the end of that administration.

However, this rushed timetable had concurrently raised ongoing concerns over construction quality.

  • Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This encompasses an earlier accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-fatal derailments.

Demands for Review and Suspension

In the wake of the catastrophe, the chief of a key rival party demanded an immediate pause in the construction and operation of all similar projects.

This pause was requested pending a comprehensive independent investigation. The party declared that the tragedy "demands prompt explanations."

In reaction, the head of state insisted that the train had been running in full accordance with all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the development and running of these vital undertakings.
