Nepal's Political Scene Sees Major Alliance Formed Between TV Host and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a significant development ahead of next year's general election, two high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance comes in the wake of widespread and deadly youth-led demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the ouster of the sitting government.

A Pledge to Address Youth Demands

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially vowed to prioritize the grievances highlighted by the new generation. This commitment follows the violent anti-corruption protests that occurred in September, which led to considerable casualties.

"Agreement must not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane after the agreement was finalized.

The September uprising was sparked by public anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a spark for deeper resentment stemming from years of slow growth and persistent allegations of systemic graft in politics.

Terms of the Fresh Electoral Agreement

According to the official pact, the positions for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread public dissatisfaction with the nation's established political class. He has in the past served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key player in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He was instrumental in setting up the caretaker government that came to power after the previous administration was removed.

Wider Government Consultations Taking Place

In a separate development, the current interim prime minister recently held consultations with several major political leaders. These discussions involved ex- prime ministers and the heads of other major parties, marking the initial such gathering since the period of the uprising.

Following these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that holding a credible election is a collective duty. The message affirmed the government's dedication to ensuring a safe and open atmosphere for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
