Larian Studios Unveil a New Divinity, Calling it Their Most Ambitious RPG Yet

The anticipation around the recent awards show was significant, especially after host Geoff Keighley shared a puzzling image of a desert monolith. The question has now been solved. The acclaimed developer is creating a brand-new Divinity game.

Revealed to be Divinity, the game was debuted with a bold trailer packed with striking imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to an orgy and the literal descent into chaos.

Moving Beyond Original Sin

Anyone hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. Larian warned that a follow-up to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not on the cards right now.

That said, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a continuation of the main series. This choice of words hints that the team could be designing a real-time experience rather than another turn-based title. For now, this is speculation, as only a cinematic trailer is available.

What Makes Divinity Special

The Divinity series is highly rated and it's fair to claim it sparked the modern wave of deep computer role-playing games. These games are defined by intricate stories, player agency, and deep class systems—traits that recently were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its world is traditional swords and sorcery, what makes Divinity apart is the remarkable agency granted to the player.

Where many modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is brimming with specialized paths you can achieve if you're playing as a specific type of character with a personal story.

The series is also famously permissive, letting players to improvise in narrative and gameplay. Virtually all objectives can be completed in a variety of manners, often in lateral fashion.

  • You might progress the story because you remembered something a non-human character said.
  • Or, you could overcome an obstacle by moving environmental hazards in a unorthodox way.

The Journey Continues

It is precisely these elements that have cemented the series to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games in history. Now, players can get ready for another adventure in this legendary franchise.
