India's capital Awakens to Hazardous Haze After Celebrations
Tuesday brought inhabitants of this heavily contaminated metropolis found themselves inhaling extremely polluted air that was classified as the "alarming" range.
Alarming Pollution Measurements
Multiple areas of the capital recorded an pollution measurement above 500, which equals 10x the healthy limit set by the global health authority.
Certain monitoring stations, readings of dangerous airborne particles soared to of eighteen hundred, amounting to 15 to 20 times exceeding healthy standards.
Pyrotechnics Restrictions and New Changes
Beginning in 2020, authorities had maintained a comprehensive restriction on the distribution and bursting of firecrackers during Diwali due to their major role to the hazardous smog that engulfs the metropolis as the cold season begins.

The proliferation of firecrackers during the celebrations also triggered a controversy with neighbouring the neighboring country, with authorities in Pakistan's Punjab pointing to declining pollution levels in Lahore on hazardous particles originating in across the border following the events.
Long-Standing Pollution Crisis
Alarmingly severe levels of pollution in the capital have persisted as a major challenge for fifteen-plus years, with the situation showing no improvement.
During the festival period, the amount of toxic particles in the atmosphere has been observed to increase dramatically to 70% higher the peak readings ever measured in China's capital, which was formerly considered as the world's most polluted urban center.
Diverse Pollution Sources
The situation in Delhi is attributed to a mix of multiple factors including heavy vehicle emissions, construction debris, development work, waste incineration and haze from farm burning in nearby states of neighboring agricultural zones.
Within these states, agricultural workers regularly burn crop residue to prepare for next season, creating toxic pollution that becomes contained over the metropolitan area as winter air arrives.

Public health and economic impact on the approximately 33 million people living in the metropolitan zone is significant, according to numerous investigations.
These hazardous conditions results in increased incidence of neurological, cardiovascular and respiratory conditions, and can potentially cause cancer.
Air quality crisis is estimated to be accounting for 10,000 premature fatalities each year in the capital.
